Terraced Hillsides and Retaining Walls

Garden walls or terracing often act as retention for hillsides and are carefully analyzed for expansive soil conditions. The use of pressure treated wood walls set with posts in cement or Keystone or pre-cast lock walls are often used to correct these situations. These walls always have a gravel base and gravel backfill (for porosity and tree root deflection) to insure drainage and lessen damage from expansion/contraction of wet soils. Natural stone can be implemented on concrete pre set walls or siding and are also used with gravel base and gravel backfill. We call this dry stacking.
